(Places of Interest Around Haifa)
As Israel's northern capital, Haifa is the center for sightseeing throughout the country's north region. Nazareth, the Galilean hills and the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret), the Golan Heights, Acre and Caesarea are all within reach of a single day's touring.
Convenient, comfortable public transportation connects Haifa with the entire region. Access is available through bus and railroad lines, an international port and an airport for domestic flights.
40 km north. A national park with beaches, camping and Club Med.
AKKO (ACRE) :
25 km north. The ancient ruins in Akko include Crusader city massive St.John's crypt, city walls and the El Jazzar Mosque.
BET SHE'ARIM :
20km south-east. On view are an ancient synagogue and vast catacombs from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Centuries.
37km south. A city built by king Herod in honor of Caesar Augustus. The Roman, Byzantine and Crusader ruins include a port, aqueduct, city walls and moat.
CARMEL NATIONAL PARK :
22,000 acres of beautiful woodland extending across the Carmel ridge. Many recreational sports ideal for picnis and outings.
DRUZE VILLAGES :
16 km southeast on the Carmel ridge. Eastern copper and basketry work is on display in the colorful market.
EIN HOD :
16 km south. A picturesque artists' village. The artists' works are on display in the local galleries.
HAI-BAR CARMEL PRESERVE :
Across from the Haifa University. A center for the re-introduction into the wild of animal species which in the past lived on the Carmel.
KIBBUTZ LOHAME HA-GETA'OT :
27 km north. The Holocaust and Resistance Museum founded by the kibbutz members, survivors of the ghettos.
MEAROT HA-CARMEL :
19 km south on the old Haifa - Tel Aviv road. Important prehistoric caves surrounded by a park.
35 km south-east. An important archaeological site; 20 strata, spanning some 6,000 years, have been uncovered, includung the stables of king Solomon and Ahab.
26 km south-east on the Carmel ridge. A Carmelite monastery stands on the traditional site of Elijah's confrontation with the Canaanite prophets of Ba'al. A wonderful panoramic view and picnic area.
32 km north. Founded by Jewish immigrants from Germany. Its boulevards, small hotels and beaches give this resort a delighful European flavor.
38 km south-east. The boyhood home of Jesus and a major Christian pilgrimage center. The Annunciatian Basilica dominates the town.
ROSH HA-NIQRA :
41 km north on the Lebanese border. Striking grottoes at sea-level taht can be reached by cablecar.
SEA OF GALILEE :
68km east. Known in Hebrew as Yam-Kinneret. Tiberias, Tabgha, Capernaum and the Mount of Beatitude lie along its shores.
ZIKHRON YA'ACOV :
33 km south. Named after the father of the Baron Edmond de Rothschild. Wine cellars, the Ha-Nadiv Park and Bet Aaronson.
